The Badminton Russian team from the University of Nizhny Novgorod wonover the German team from the University of Duisburg Essen by 3 matches to 2. France and Switzerland won the Bronze Medal.
The German team, when theywere winning 2-1, had a last minute casualty when Inken Wienefeld was injured, awarding the lastpoint to the Russian team because of dropping out.
The Russian team started winning the matches on mixed doubles with the team formed by Milkail Zarembovsky and Anastacia Chervaikova, with a score of 2 setsto 0 (21-10, 21-15). On the second and third matches, the University of Duisburg Essen team won the women doubles with a score of 10-21, and the men singles with a score of 7-21, 21-12 and 16-21.
On the fifth and decisive match, Stephan Yaroslacev and Mikhail Zarembovsky won over the Germanmale team, Marlann Ufermanand Timon Ufermann, with a scoreof 21-13 and 21-16, earning the decisive point in order to win the Badminton team competition and the first Gold Medal of the European University Games.
The University of Bourdeauxand the University of Bern, Bronze Medals.
The teams from Bourdeaux and Bern earned a Bronze Medal by getting more points in each oftheir respective classifications,winning over the teams that makeup the top six, such as the Universityof Granada and the Universityof Olsztyn. Both the Vice Rector of the University of Córdoba, Manuel Torres, and the President ofthe organising committee of theEuropean University Games 2012, Adam Roczek from EUSA, werepresent at the awards ceremony.Stephan Bergh, the President ofFISU and Rafael García Cobos, Mayor of Encinarejo, attendedthe ceremony as well. Encinarejo is the official sports venue for the badminton and table tennis championships.
